What an LMS is for
A learning management system is built to deliver and administer training. Enterprise suites (and many mid-market LMS/LXP products) go further: skills maps, content libraries, AI authoring, HRIS sync, dashboards. That is real value — especially if your problem is scale of learning ops.
An LMS answers: Was the course assigned? Did the system mark it complete?
- Assign courses by role or cohort
- Host or link content
- Track completions and due dates
- Run quizzes and issue completion records
- Report for managers and L&D
What “proof of training” means
Proof of training answers a harder question: Can a third party trust that completion — and verify it later — without taking your word for a PDF or a screenshot?
Proof of training answers: Can someone outside your company re-check this claim?
- Integrity of completion — not “page opened” or scrubber-dragged to the end
- Assessment that unlocks only after genuine completion (when the course requires it)
- A credential (certificate) with a stable identity (serial)
- Independent verification — public status (valid / revoked / expired) without an LMS login
- Lifecycle — expiry reminders, revoke when someone leaves, exports for audits
Side-by-side
Swipe sideways to see every column
| Need | Typical LMS | Proof-of-training layer |
|---|---|---|
| Assign & host courses | Strong | Optional / BYO |
| Skills / LXP / content library | Often strong (enterprise) | Usually out of scope |
| Stop skippable video “completions” | Rarely first-class | Core |
| Exam gated on real watch | Varies | Core |
| Certificate PDF | Common | Common |
| Public verify without LMS login | Rare | Core |
| Valid / revoked / expired states | Rare | Core |
| Client sees only their people | Portals sometimes | Scoped client views (Business and Scale only) |
| Audit export with integrity checks | Reports common | Audit packs + checksums (Starter and up; Free: trial) |
| Transparent SMB pricing | Varies | Often clearer |
You can have an LMS and still lack proof. You can also run proof-first on BYO content without buying an enterprise LXP.
When an LMS alone is enough
- Training is internal only; nobody outside will re-verify
- “Completed in the system” satisfies your auditors
- Your priority is skills, pathways, and content volume
- You’re ready for enterprise LMS/LXP implementation cost and timeline
When you need proof of training
- Clients or partners ask for evidence on a named person
- Auditors reject screenshots and editable PDFs
- You sell staffing / BPO / VA capacity and must show training status
- You’re a training center issuing certs under your name that employers must trust
- You’ve been burned by skippable video or shared answer keys
- Refreshers matter — expired must not look like “never trained”
“Completion” is doing too much work
Vendors often say “audit-ready” when they mean dashboards, acknowledgments, and immutable logs of what the LMS recorded. That helps compliance admin.
It is not the same as measuring watch credit on the server from intervals actually reached, locking the exam until lectures are genuinely finished, or letting a client scan a QR and see valid / revoked / expired with no seat on your LMS. If your RFP language says “proof of completion,” ask which definition they mean.
How Elumio fits
Elumio is a centralized place to run BYO courses (onboarding, mandatory packs, refreshers, HIPAA-style privacy modules as one example) with a proof stack built in: server-side watch → gated exam → QR certificate (valid / revoked / expired) → expiry email reminders.
It is not an enterprise LXP, not a content library, and not a replacement for every LMS feature. If you already have an Academy or LMS and only need proof, say so in sales conversations — product fit depends on whether you’re greenfield or layering (our outbound ICP prioritizes greenfield; product can still sit beside existing content).
- Audit packs — Starter and up (Free: trial)
- Client views — Business and Scale only
Related questions
Is Elumio an LMS?
It’s a training platform for mandatory/BYO programmes with proof-of-completion controls. It does not try to be a full skills LXP or content marketplace.
Can I keep my current LMS?
If you only need credentials and watch integrity, ask us about fit. Many buyers who lack any LMS use Elumio as the system of training + proof.
How is this different from “audit-ready reporting”?
Reporting shows what your system stored. Public verification lets someone outside your system check a specific certificate’s status.
Where do certificates fit?
The certificate is the handoff; proof is the chain behind it. See verifiable training certificates for the QR, serial, and valid / revoked / expired deep-dive.
